GEAR REQUIREMENTS FOR RIDING SKILLS TEST
RST- $20

CERTIFIED DOT HELMET

The standard is Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218).

This is known commonly as the DOT (Department of Transportation) helmet standard for riding on the road.

YOUR OWN MOTORCYCLE

This motorcycle must be STREET LEGAL

Upon arrival we will do a short inspection.

WHAT INDIANA RESIDENTS NEED TO BRING

A State Issued Drivers License and a valid Permit are REQUIRED to take the test.

Gear: Residents are REQUIRED to wear a DOT approved Helmet

The Skills Test must be taken on a registered, insured and street legal motorcycle as defined in the following sections of Indiana Code;

NOTICE

 

This test is PASS OR FAIL.

 

There are no refunds and registration is NOT transferable.

 

Once you pass the motorcycle skills test, you will need to visit a BMV branch with your signed and stamped motorcycle learners permit to receive your motorcycle endorsement.

 

What the Riding Skills Test Entails/Covers

 

The motorcycle skills test consists of several elements which measure an applicant’s basic control of the motorcycle and response to hazardous situations. The motorcycle skills test consists of the following actions:

  • Starting
  • Overall control
  • Cornering
  • Turning
  • Braking
  • Stopping at designated points
  • Offset cone weave
  • U-turn
  • Quick stop
  • Changing lanes
  • Obstacle swerve (to simulate changing lanes)

 

 

“Points” will be assessed if the applicant fails to properly execute any of the maneuvers listed above. If you fail the motorcycle skills test, you must wait until the next day before taking the test again.

 

If you fail three motorcycle skills tests while holding a motorcycle learner’s permit, you must wait two months from the date of the last failed skills test before taking the motorcycle skills test again.

MRT practices ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time)

 

EYE PROTECTION

Face shield or goggles that meet Indiana state standards. This also includes glasses.

FULL-FINGER GLOVES

Protect your hands from the elements on and off the bike. Full fingered gloves are a must have.

 

LONG SLEEVES

Long sleeves are required for the course. Additional dress wear is acceptable.

Dress for the weather.

LONG PANTS

Long Pants preferably jeans are required for the course. These pants must not be torn. Pants with holes are not permitted.

OVER-THE-ANKLE FOOTWEAR

A sturdy over-the-ankle boot is meant to cover the ankle bone. This is a requirement to minimize injury, should one occur during field exercises and maneuvers.
